These ligaments have memory and want to shift back to their original position. Teeth have ligaments that surround them. Just like a rubber band, when stretched, wants to go back to normal, your teeth want to move back to their original position. Every orthodontist is alternative, but for me, I recommend wearing retainers at least twelve to fourteen hours a day for two years. Amazingly, I often hear patients tell me that their previous orthodontist told them only to wear their retainers for a number of years, and then they are good to go without them. This means every single day you must wear your trays. Retainers can generate tooth soreness. As long as you wear your retainers consistently, your teeth will adjust to the retainer’s position and no longer cause discomfort. This soreness will go away with time.
