    A pulpotomy is the removal of the pulp (or nerve) in the primary tooth and is necessary if the pulp is exposed when the decay is cleaned out. For small, one or two surface cavities composite resin or glass ionomer would be acceptable. Posterior primary teeth that require a pulpotomy should also be restored with stainless steel crowns. Primary teeth with large two or three surface cavities should be restored with stainless steel crowns. The larger the restoration, the more likely it will fail.
